Kindergarten-2nd GradersWe only have one day of PE this week for classes with Thanksgiving break being right around the corner! First and Second graders participated in Catch the Cows. Teams were divided into colored barns and had to catch the cows (make a basket in our lowered hoops) to catch the cow and put it back in their barn. Practice makes better, and we could see that as our classes went on! Kindergarten participated in Follow the Leader Dribble, and dribbling builders and bulldozers! 3rd-5th GradersWe continued to build our skills in dribbling, passing and shooting by playing Scrabble Basketball. Students were divided into teams and dribbled to the hoop took a shot (picked up a scrabble letter if they made it) and passed the ball to the next person on their team. Students that were not currently shooting were working cooperatively to try and spell a word with the highest point value to win. Winner are also featured on the bulletin board outside the gym! Lots of cardio, lots of practice!

Kdg.-2nd GradersLower elementary concluded their volleying unit this week. We finished by participating in an activity called Volleyball Battleship. It was an absolute blast. The kids would peek into the gymnasium and get so excited to see the parachutes over the net. We started with basketball stations in first and second grades. The (3) skills we will focus on this unit are: Dribbling (mostly), Shooting (sometimes), and Passing (sometimes). In kindergarten, our goal is to be able to dribble the ball with one hand, not two. First graders should be able to continuously dribble with one hand. Second graders should be able to demonstrate a mature dribble with their favorite hand! 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary finished their volleyball unit with a traditional game of beach ball volleyball. Boy was I impressed. We were serving the ball over the net, making multiple touches-not just one person hitting it back and forth, and communication was golden. Upper elementary rotated through (6) basketball stations to assess our abilities in dribbling, passing, and shooting. If students were on task and time alloted we played Dribble Pyramid at the end. Dribble pyramid has three stages. You have one partner and you advance if your partner either loses control or breaks eye contact (practicing eyes up!) Winner moves on to the next stage, other student stays and challenges another student. Kindergarten-2nd GradersWe have been working on our "Diamonds and Fingertips" (Sets) and "Pancake, pancake, sausage, sausage" (passes) in two different activities. We played both beach ball volleyball/big ball volleyball and Magic Ball. I have been so impressed with our 2nd graders this week. We have went above and beyond and the kids even learned how to rotate this week too! 3rd-5th GradersIt has been another great week in PE! Upper elementary started off the week participating in our new dynamic warm-up for the start of the 2nd quarter. We continued to chart our one minute sets and passes to see how much better we can get with practice, and played many fun activities. The beginning of the week we focused on our serves. We played an activity called Dead Fish. 3rd and 4th graders learned the underhand serve, where as 5th graders had to opportunity to start overhand serve! The last half of the week we played King/Queen of the Court to help with our passing and communicating/calling the ball. I couldn't believe our growth in one class!
Congratulations! Carsyn H. in Mrs. Dougherty's first grade had his ticket drawn for completing his monthly calendar. Carsyn now is our stretching leader for the month of November! How exciting!
The second winner this month was Peighton G. in Mrs. Hoholik's third grade class. She put her ticket in to the Extra PE class jar and was this month's winner! Nice job- I will be seeing your ENTIRE class during my prep coming up! I cannot wait to see what activity she chooses! I have attached an extra copy of November's calendar if you have misplaced yours, please see the link below! Kdg.-2nd GradersWe started off this week with our annual Halloween Stations! The kids were cheering when they came into the gym, and several told me it was one of their favorite days-definitely makes set-up worth it! We had seven stations this year: (1) Spider Web Fling (2) Tangled Web (3) Witches' Hat Toss/Pumpkin Tick Tac Toe (4) Spider Web Wall (5) Scootin' through the Pumpkin Patch (6) Feed Frankenstein (7) Monster March with Buddy Walkers. The favorite this year would have to have been between Spider Web Fling or the Pumpkin Patch Tag. The last half of the week we began our volleying skills. 2nd graders rotated around stations where as the Kdg. and 1st graders got to explore volleying with beach balls and balloons. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary took part in the same Halloween Stations as the lower elementary did above. We then progressed into our volleyball unit at the end of the week. We have three main skills we are focusing on, passing, setting and serving. Each day of the volleyball unit students will time themselves for one minute doing either pass or set, in order to see how much they grow as the unit goes on. I can't wait to see how much we improve. |
