Beginning of the week:We finished up the last of our kickball games at the beginning of this week. 1st and 2nd graders played a game of, "Mad Dog" Kickball. The first and second graders were quick to learn that Together Everyone Accomplishes More! Mad Dog kickball helps to keep everyone active. After the kicker kicks the ball the first fielder catches it, and then the rest of the class has to get in a line and either do over-under-over-under in a line or under-under-under-under, we switched it up each time. Over under was definitely the most difficult with so much bending and twisting. The older kids were finally able to play a traditional game of kickball like they have been hoping. We used a pumpkin kickball I picked up from Five Below when I was downstate so it was pretty festive! Middle of the week:We did Halloween Stations K-5 this week, since Monday is usually partly lost due to parties and the Halloween Parade. Stations for 2016 Included:
End of the week:Emerald had local firefighters and law enforcement in to teach they about Fire Prevention/Safety. We were out of the gym and in a classroom so we learned about Pedestrian/Wheeled Safety. The older kids finished a Safe Routes to School Student Survey and played a PAC Man Pedestrian Game. I filled them in on the fitness calendars we are going to be starting soon...stayed tuned for my monthly newsletter for instructions on how your student may win a brand new bike helmet!

We were fortunate enough to receive snowshoes and under desk pedal bikes . One of the last parts to complete this grant is for the parents to lend us information on what factors affect your decision to let your children walk or bike to school. It would be greatly appreciated if you would complete a survey for us. The link is listed below. It doesn't take long at all! Thanks!
Kindergarten-2nd GradersThis week we participated in a variety of activities that really tested our cooperation skills. We played, "2 Person Kickball", and "Kindergarten Kickball". It was a great time to practice moving in open space and being cautious of others. We learned the importance of using effort for time (fast/slow) the longer it took me to get to the ball, the further the runner got! Several non-locomotor skills were needed, some we touched on were bending, balancing, twisting and turning. The biggest task we worked on this week was two-handed catch, and either stationary or moving kick depending on our skill and grade level! In 2 person kickball, the students had pairs and one partner kicked the ball and ran around one cone until the other partner could get the ball and put it back on the cone to stop them! In Kindergarten Kickball, the children were split into two teams: kicking and fielding. The kicking team picked up half cones after they kicked the ball to learn the direction of the bases and the importance of quickness. The fielding team worked together to get the ball back in the crate to stop the kicking team from picking up cones! It was a great week! 3rd-5th GradersThe students started working on their kickball game play this week. We are learning three different kinds of kickball in this unit. In the beginning of the week we played "Matball." Matball is very basic kickball game that removes the pressure of having to run the bases. You run when you feel comfortable. The gym mats are way bigger than a traditional base so the students have a better opportunity to get on base. In the last half of the week, the students played, "Triple Kick Kickball." In triple kick kickball you have three students on the kicking team kick the ball and try to round the bases. The fielding team objective is to get their balls as quickly as possible and set them back on the cones. If the student beats their ball they score one point for their team. No points are awarded if the fielding team is able to get the kickers ball on the cone before the kicker rounds the bases. I took a vote to see which game was winning, and in almost every class it was divided equally. We will play traditional kickball next week, but I am doubtful if after playing these games they will prefer it...we shall see! Another week has already came and gone! I am so lucky to work with such wonderful kiddos on a daily basis! Just a reminder as the weather is getting colder and the sickness bug is going around: If your child isn't feeling well or needs to sit out for a various reason please sent me a note letting me know! Thank you! Kindergarten- 2nd Graders:We continued to work on our dribbling and soccer skills this week. We made so many improvements from last week, I am so proud! The Kindergarten through 2nd graders started the week out playing "Red Light, Green Light" using their soccer dribbling skills. If they were caught moving after the red light, they moved off the field and went to practice their dribbling skills around cones on the sidelines . We had to use our strategy skills and find out that we couldn't just kick the ball, and instead needed to learn to work on controlling the ball! Kiddos this age LOVE this game, and were so excited to play! We played "Scooter Soccer" as our culminating activity to our foot dribble practice. We tried it with traditional indoor soccer balls, and tried it with the over-sized inflatable balls. As mentioned on the Human Kinetics Website, "As children play on scooters, their increased physical activity contributes to the development of their gross and fine motor skills, refining and developing muscular strength in their upper and lower bodies. In addition, scooter play helps develop balance." The kids definitely felt that as many of them were surprised to see how much of a workout it was! 3rd-5th GradersThe older kids continued to work on the refinement of their skills once again. This week we really focused on kicking with a purpose, accuracy, and ball control. We played both "Pin Soccer" and "Sideline Soccer". These activities were very different in the fact that pin soccer there are not a lot of strict rules, you could kick the ball all over and it would be okay because there would be a goal over that way. When we started sideline soccer, the students really realized that in a traditional soccer game it has a time limit and the less we work on accuracy and ball control/sharing/passing the ball the less less likely you were to try and score. The students were divided on different color teams and it was exciting to hear them plan with their teammates while acting like bummers to help keep the ball in for the colors that were playing. Kdg.-2nd GradeThe lower grades worked on developing their foot dribble, trap, and instep kick skills this week. We started off the week using soccer skill stations. The stations included: dribbling, passing, throw-ins, trapping, instep stationary kick, rock wall/jumping skills. We really focused on not using our toes, but the inside of our foot instead. When we were kicking we were making sure to watch the ball, take a big step and kick using our shoelaces. Towards the end of the week we played "Dribble 500." The gym was like a race track and the students ("cars") had to avoid each other while dribbling to avoid a car crash. Every now and the the music would stop and their cars would stall. When this happened, the students had to trap with the ball with the sole of their foot on a poly spot. We would change directions and adjust our speed: walking, fast walk, and even a jog towards the end of the class! 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary worked on refining their skills in order to play a soccer game later in the week. They participated in the stations like the lower elementary did, I just adjusted them to make them more difficult for the older kids. The last day of PE this week they played a game called, "Pin Soccer." It was so much fun and quite a workout! The class was divided into four teams and they were able to score in any of the three other goals that didn't belong to them. If they scored, we would restart the game in the middle, but the students would steal one of the three cones in the goal they scored on. The objective was to have the most cones in their goal at the end of class. This game was really great because they were always moving. If a offensive player was getting tired, they were able to switch with either the goalie or defense to allow they to catch their breath. They all did a nice job and were able to try several different positions. |
