Kdg.-2nd GradeWe wrapped our rolling unit this week. In the beginning of the week, lower elementary played a game called, "Rockin' Rollers." The object of this game was to run from one side of the gym to the other without getting your foot tagged by the ball rolled by a roller on the sidelines. If your foot was tagged, then you too became a roller. The last runner left was the champion and was allowed to choose rollers for the next round. The students did a phenomenal job with this activity, and actually inspired me to let the older kids do this as well. In our last PE days this week, the lower elementary students were allowed to bowl on our bowling lanes (they didn't keep score) but they did learn what basic terms were such as strike, spare, split, etc. Each student was allowed two rolls like in traditional bowling then it was their turn to set up pins. The kiddos were so excited when they knocked over the pins! 3rd-5th GradersThe upper elementary kids started off the week playing "bowling bingo". It was a fun twist on keeping score in bowling. The students were divided up into teams, and helped score each other. Students were given two rolls and were to add up the score of each roll...this was the number they would fill in on their bowling cards. Just like normal bingo sometimes it took a while to try and get your number or maybe a certain number of pins wasn't there. The winners of bowling bingo were able to choose a bowling tattoo to take home. Kids were telling me how fun this game was, and they weren't even thinking about the mathmateical components included. The older kids finished off the week playing the highly cardio "Rockin' Roller" game that we played with lower elementary in the beginning of the week. We are feeling the frigid temps this week, and with inside recess the kids all had quite a bit of energy they needed to burn off! Winners were chosen from our Fitness Calendar Tickets.....and.....
Bike Helmet: Nevaeh Engleheart (4th) Lindstrom Bike Helmet: Nate Schoenow (5th) Dale Choose a PE Activity: Tanya Rodman (1st) Dougherty Tanya chose to play Sharks and Minnows as her PE Activity. The WHOLE class was able to come down for an extra PE class today, and I even participated with them so they were really excited! We had a great time! **Remember, if you would like to be able to receive tickets you need to be actively participating in your fitness calendar, we have some really nice goodies as prizes! ** Kdg.-2nd GradersWe were busy this week working our our rolling skills! In the beginning of the week, we played "Roll and Score." The students were divided up into different teams, and the goal was for them to roll a ball and have it land in one of the hoops that were spread out over the whole gym. If they were successful, they ran down and put their hoops around the cone. If they were unsuccessful, they ran down and arouund the hoop anyway and went back to try again. I was really proud of how well some of our emeralds were working together and showing their teamwork abilities. At the end of the week, we played, "Pin Shuffle." The students were paired up with another student and were on opposite sides of the gym. The pins were all along the center. Partners took turns rolling the ball, and if they knocked their pin over, they moved the pin one cone closer to them. Some of the kids were in quite a battle with their partner going back and forth! 3rd- 5th GradersWe had a ball at the beginning of the week working our our bowling abilities in the game, "Pin Down." Half of the gym had hula hoops with a pin in them. Half of the student started in the pins, and half started in the feeding line. Foam balls were scattered out around the gym. The students had to try and protect their pin from all angles, all while trying to roll the balls to knock down another students pin. If the pin was knocked over they would yell, "pin down" and the would go to the feeder line and the next person would fill their spot. This game went so quickly students weren't out for long. They liked it because they could see the dodgeball component, and I liked it because it wasn't like dodgeball where students were targets, the pins were! At the end of the week, the students played, "Cardio Bowling." In cardio bowling a team of 3 or 4 was formed. One person was the bowler, one person was the retriever, and one person was on deck. It moved quickly and was perfect for getting the kids active and moving in a sport that typically lacks that. We are starting our bowling unit, however, we only have two sets of bowling pins. If you have any empty 2 liter bottles at home that you would be willing to donate we would gladly take them. Bowling pin sets start at 60$ so it is much cheaper for us to find bottles. Thank you in advance :) Hopefully we will begin more traditional bowling next week if we get enough!
Kdg.-2nd GradeA good portion of this week was dedicated to practice our songs, and actions for our Christmas Musical for the K-1st graders. We finished up our dribbling unit this week, and they were allowed one combo day of dribbling and BEEF Shooting...I was so impressed! They did awesome. We started out this week playing, "Pac Man Dribble". The kids were to follow the lines of the gym and two students were the pac man people who were trying to tag them. Once a student was tagged they would sit down, like in tradtional pac man there was no passing and they had to go back the other way! They did this all while dribbling a basketball (we started out without of course)! This game was great because it gave us some valuable pathway practice, in additon to our dribbling. We played "Popcorn Basketball" towards the end of the week. The students were divided into 6 different teams and they were to take turns dribbling the ball down and getting in the BEEF form to take one shot. If they made it, they went to the middle and picked up a yellow yarn ball. If they didn't make it, they dribbled back and used a bounce or chest pass to exchange the ball with their partner. The winning team was able to give exercises to me and the rest of the class to do! 3rd-5th GradersThe older kids concluded their basketball unit this week as well. We played a version of sideline basketball in the beggining of the week. Towards the last half of the week, we continued our sideline games (if it is a big class like the 4th grade-tournament style) or we chose our favorite basketball activity from the last two weeks and did that. I was so suprised by how many classes chose to play the scrabble basketball as their favorite game. The grade champions are pictured below. Fitness CalendarsI am thrilled with the amound of Fitness Calendars that keep getting returned! Nice job Emerald Elementary, and thank you parents for your support! If you need another copy they can be downloaded via the button below! This coming Tuesday (December 6th) will be the last day to turn them in if you would like to be entered into the drawing for a brand new bike helmet, or to choose the PE activity for the day! Good Luck! Christmas MusicalThe musical was a hit, it was packed in there! The kids did an amazing job, and they all looked so adorable! Jill Connin was kind enough to share her video of the performance if you missed it or were unable to video it. The link is unlisted so you cannot search for it, it is only available through this link: Kindergarten ArtWe have been working on our reindeer watercolor paintings this week. The students drew the reindeer on their own, traced it with permenant marker, added watercolors and glitter. They look FABULOUS and are up in the Art Hallway for your viewing pleasure! The students that finished early were able to make scuptures out of clay! Check out some of our pictures below! |
