Kdg.- 2nd GradersWe started this week off playing a favorite, "Hungry, Hungry, Hippos!" We focused on different ways to use the scooter so that it was working different muscles. Also, scooter safety was reviewed for the year. The last half of the week, we played "Critter Dash." Students were given football flagged jerseys and had to avoid the taggers who would pull their tails. If their tail was pulled they were no longer able to run down the the food pile and stock food for the long winter to share with the other critters. Whichever team scored the most fruits/veggie beanbags that round were able to be the taggers next! It was a really good cardiovascular endurance building activity! 3rd-5th GradersThis was a great week in PE. Almost every grade came in and saw the footballs in the middle of the gym and got excited. Students began this week with an activity called "End Zone Football." End zone football was perfect because you were able to try all kinds of positions. You could be a roller, trying to tag another persons foot to send them to jail. You could be a "Quaterback" and have to overhand throw the football accurately to a teammate in jail. Which in turn made students "wide receivers" when they tried nabbing the balls while in jail. Or, you could be a defensive player, and trying to block or perform interceptions for your team, to try and send the Quaterback to jail! The last half of the week, we played "Air Force Football" which is a personal favorite of mine. It is an incredible workout and combines both football and ultimate frisbee concepts. The kiddos really seemed to enjoy this game too. I am so impressed with the effort I saw this week!

Kdg.-2nd GradersLower elementary started off the week playing a game called, "Team Memory." Players must physically and mentally work together to trya and collect 5 of their color beanbags that are hidden under the frisbees. We talked a lot about strategy and how it was easier to make a plan so the same team didn't keep looking over the same frisbees! We also talked about being sneaky and not picking the frisbee straight up so that other teams could have a free look! We took turns traveling in different ways and learned what "locomotor movements" were! Towards the end of the week, we played a school favorite! Keeper of the Castle is a fun activity in which the keepers try to protect their treasure. Players were divided into teams and the one that collected the most treasure was the winner! It was well into the 80's this week so we were working hard, and sweating a ton! 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary students finished off their last FitnessGram test this week, the curl-up on their first day of PE this week. We began our football unit with a catching/receiving game called, "Perfect Pass." I had many kids tell me how much they enjoyed this activity and they got so many practice reps! We went over the overhand throwing cues, and I quizzed them at the end of class to see if they could remember! I was impressed! Week two is in the books! Lower elementary started off the week playing a new game we have never played before called, "Straddleball." Straddleball is similar to the popular game gagaball, but requires less equipment. It was picture day this week so 1/2 of the gym was occupied, and the game was perfect. The object of straddleball is to score a goal buy striking the ball through your opponents legs. The second half of the week K-2 did their "Stick Races." Students were on teams and they took turns running around the gym and collecting sticks for their team, while their teammates cheered them on. It seems simple but they BEG for this all the time, little do they know it is a running assessement! Upper elementary continued their FitnessGram Testing this week, and even got to play a bit of straddleball if we finished testing quickly. This week we focused on cardiovascular component (Pacer Test) and the muscular strength/endurance test in the push up test. Wow! What a crazy and exciting week this has been! We have had assemblies, fire drills, behavior assemblies and so forth! This week in PE I introduced the students to our PE Procedures. We went over our emergency drills, classroom supplies, first aid, learned about my forms of communication (weebly-newsletter-monthly calendars) and found our new stretching spots! Instead of reading the class rules we did rule relays! Students were divided up into 6 teams and raced down to find a puzzle piece. (3rd-5th) had pieces scattered all over the end of the gym with math problems, numbers, number words and dice numbers. They had to figure out what piece of their puzzle added up to their line in order to get the right puzzle piece! Kinder-2nd simply ran in a straight line down to a hula hoop that had the correct pieces inside already-it too early in the year for the number challenge! I was so proud of our teamwork abilities and our leaders that emerged in each group to help put the puzzle together! After each puzzle was assembled we read and went over our class expectations! The lucky students who were able to have two classes this week began their flexability test-Sit and Reach. I chose use this test this year as opposed to the shoulder stretch test last year to hopefully celebrate greater success!
