Kdg.- 2nd GradersThis week is a short week on top of the Kindergarten and First Graders having musical preparations! This week we continued working on our hand dribble playing the game "Dribbling Dragon Tails". At first we just played the game running without any basketballs. We used the juggling scarves, and if your flag was pulled we chose a different exercise to do each round. After we got the hand of the game, we played it dribbling. It really helped us to think with the end in mind, and move in a defensive manner. 3rd-5th GradersThis week we practiced a basketball cross curricular activity. The 3rd-5th graders played basketball scrabble. They were each divided up into teams, and each team had two basketballs. They would dribble to the basketball, and use the BEEF format to shoot the ball. If the ball went in they were allowed to go to the middle of the gym and pick up a scrabble letter. The teammates waiting in like worked cooperatively to try and come up with a higher scoring word that the other teams. This game was an absolute blast, and I have to say I was so impressed with the words so of these kids were able to come up with! 29 and 30 point words are quite an accomplishment in PE. They did awesome and were working up quite a sweat trying to get more and more tiles to try and spell bigger words.

Kdg-2nd GradersWe all participated in basketball stations on our first day of PE this week. This helped us to gain an understanding of the skills we will be learning. The younger kids will be predominately working on hand dribble, but we included some shooting stations as well. We are trying to remember three main things when dribbling: 1) Fingertips only 2) Only waist high 3) Eyes up! They are doing a phenomenal job and some of them can even explain BEEF in the huddle. We played the game "Feed the Frogs" on our second PE day this week. This game helped to enforce proper hand dribbling while both stationary and moving. They students were "frogs" and had to leave their lily pad hula hoop to eat as many "flies" (poly spots) as possible in the 2:45. We took turns using our left hand, right hand, and switching back and forth. 3rd-5th GradersThe older students worked on basketball stations this week as well. We had 6 of them and worked on bounce pass, chest pass, free throws, dribbling, shooting, etc. The second day we started to apply our skills and all of the groups LOVED our activity. We played the "Ultimate Shooting Game." We utilized all 6 of our basketball hoops, with two teams at each hoop. The first person in the line shoot and got their own rebound. They had to either chest pass, or bounce pass the ball to the next person in line. If a basket was made the team would all yell (1-5) depending on the number of baskets made. Once a team made 5 they moved on to challenge the next team. It was competitive and exciting and teammates were working together to better each others form. A few of the classes even had students make it all the way around before class was over! This week we finished up tearing our shades of brown paper for our owls. We added our eyes (traced circles), noses and leaves at the bottom. They turned out too cute. The kids took them home today-so be on the lookout! We started our crayon resist watercolor winter hats at the end of the week. We worked on color mixing and cleaning our brush every time so all the paints in the palette do not turn black. Also, we talked about bad hair days and how we don't need to smash the brushes into the paper. I was surprised with out creative some of them were. We will be adding finishing touches next week, and then they will be on display in the hallway in the weeks to come. Kdg.-2ndWe finished up our volleying skills this week, and added striking. The students did an absolutely phenomenal job working on their volleyball skills. Some of the kids were even telling me they were practicing at home! Early in the week we played "Clean Your Room" with the volleyball nets. The kiddos were using the skills they learned to get the volleyball trainers over the net and onto the other side of the room. Every so often, I would blow the whistle, students would freeze, and we would see whose room was cleaner! At the end of the week, we adapted our abilities to using difference sized balls to hit over the net. In this unit students were given the opportunity to use, balloons, volleyball trainers, beach balls, and even a huge over-sized volleyball! 3rd-5thParent teacher conferences on Tuesday put a little bit of a damper on the older kids PE time this week as it was a half day. We worked on a modified volleyball game this week called, "Volley Bounce". We used the standard volleyball rules and rotations, and the players used the serves, bumps, and sets we have been learning. The difference, however, is the students are given a "1 bounce rule" which means that the ball can hit the floor once in between hits and still be played, if the ball hit the floor twice consecutively it was considered a dead ball, and play was restarted. I was so impressed with how quickly some of the classes caught on to rotation, and who was supposed to have the ball. This was so much fun this week, and the kids seemed to learn a great deal in our volleyball unit! On Monday, we worked on our patriotic art (we painted with marbles- how fun!). It is up in the main foyer for viewing. Kindergarten ones are the smaller sheets. They turned out fantastic! Wednesday we began our owl project. The students are working on their fine motor skills this week as they are not allowed to cut the paper, only tear little pieces, it is quite a project so we will be working on it next Monday as well! Kdg.-2nd GradersIn celebration of Halloween, we played Zombie Tag on Monday and listened to Halloween Music. Two students were chosen as the "zombies" and they each had a hula hoop around their foot. They had to try and tag their classmates and turn them into zombies as well! It was a really fun game, and with the hoop around your foot they really resemble the way a zombie would move! We started our volleyball skills this week as well. Students in the lower grades started out with balloons this week. We learned what a "set" (diamond, fingertips, two hands, overhead) was and practiced hitting the balloon back and forth over the volleyball nets. We really worked on our volleying skills and our abilities to keep hitting it back and forth without catching it each time! 3rd-5th GradersWith all of the Halloween Festivities planned for the afternoon on Monday, the older kids were away from PE. We started working on our volleyball skills this week. Specifically, we talked about overhead pass / setting and how they should be using their "diamonds and fingertips", forearm pass / bumping (pancake, pancake, sausage, sausage, or fist bump wrap) and underhand serve. I think many of them were surprised just how much work goes into volleyball, and that it is in fact more difficult than they first thought! We switched to our Art special this week! We were festive in making our own pumpkins. The students worked on naming their primary colors and mixing them together to form the secondary colors. We learned just how powerful red was (just a dab!) when mixed with yellow to make orange. We drew basic shapes: squares, rectangles, circles, etc. for the faces of our pumpkins and cut them out and glued them on. I think the Kindergarteners are really going to enjoy art this quarter!
