To conclude our Jump Rope for Heart Activities, each class was able to participate in our jump-a-thon. Classes were spread out and everyone began jumping at the same time. As soon as a student missed, or their rope stopped moving they were to sit down. Fitness calendars go home each month attached to the newsletter. They are optional but encouraged. If students completed a certain number of days they receive tickets. They choose what prizes they would like to choose.
Fitness calendar winners for the month of January were: Kaden (COHO 3rd) Bike Helmet! Alexis (Richey-K) Bike Helmet! Kalle (Johnson) Extra PE class! Congratulations and keep up the good work!! We have kicked off our Jump Rope for Heart Activities, and the kids are having a blast! They started with our first group of stations in the beginning of the week. We had 6. I would have to say they seemed to enjoy the long rope the most or the big twirl and jump one! 1. Agility ladders (3-5) and Mini Hurdles (K-2) 2. Single Rope Practice with Pictures 3. Standing Long Jump 4. Twirl and Jump Rope 5. Hopscotch (K-2) and Partner Jump Cards (3-5) 6. Long Rope Practice. The second half of the week we did choice stations where they could choose where they would go as long as another group wasn't there. We worked on: 1. Box Jumps with steppers 2. Single Jump Practice 3. Jump Rope Rainbow Challenge with Pictures 4. Standing Long Jump 5. Twirl and Jump 6. ABCs of Jump Rope 7. Long Rope Practice 8. Older kids were introduced to Double Dutch
Kdg.- 2nd GradersMrs. Dougherty's class and Ms. Sherbinow's classes were able to get out and try the showshoes after our snowfall this past weekend. Unfortunatley, we had freezing rain and sub zero temps the next couples days so the other 1st and 2nd graders will have to wait for better weather. They had a good time, and many were surprised how hard it was to turn around in them! We had 100th day stations for the beginning of the week. Students participated in a wide variety of activities such as juggling scarves, jump roping, basketball dribbling etc. Doing 100 of an activity really got our hearts beating. We played hockey clean up the remainder of the week. Students were divided on teams and worked together to get the most balls in their goals. They were able to use the steppers too, which was fun! 3rd-5th GradersThis might have been their favorite unit so far! We worked on our hockey skills in a game of sideline hockey in the beginning of the week, and played mini games towards the end. In the mini games, students played a game for 6 minutes straight and then we would use a randomizer app and they would get new teams each time. They really seemed to like this because they were able to play with more people and if they had a good or bad team, they knew it was only for a portion of time, then they would switch. We still have been waiting around for a good snowfall for snowshoeing, but Mr. Lindstrom's class still had fun getting used to the snowshoes! Kdg.- 2ndLower elementary started this week off learning about striking with long handled implements. We learned the proper way to hold a hockey stick, and some of the basic rules such as keeping your stick on the floor for safety in PE. We went through partner passing, cones, and even got to practice shooting into a goal for a bit. The last half of the week we played two games and split the class in half. The first game was "Poison Puck" and the second was, "Minefield." The kids seemed to really love both activities but based on our huddle at the end poison puck seemed to come out on top! 3rd-5thEveryone was so excited we are finally beginning our hockey unit! We did stations our first PE period of the week, and the rock wall was open as well. Our second PE class we combined the two games that the little kids played into one. It was an absolute blast! Having mines set up on half of the court made it more challenging to avoid the poison puck for the more experienced players, while students that were new could focus on just one task at hand. If they hit a mine, or were tagged by the poison puck they had to choose between 10 jumping jacks or running one lap around the gym. Students wanted to get back in as quickly as possible and weren't even noticing how long they were being active for! It was great! |
