Kdg.-2nd GradersWe had an eventful week in lower elementary this week. We continued working on our personal / social skills of teamwork, following directions, sharing equipment and taking turns. We used the parachute on their first day of PE this week. We played a variety of games such as cat and mouse, duck duck goose with the parachute, climb the mountain, popcorn and color shift. It was a blast, and we really learned how important it is that we work together. The second half of the week was equally exciting. Students were able to construct hula huts with increasing levels. Level one started easy with them simply building it and racing to the otherside of the gym. We climbed through, went through blindfolded and more. The most challenging task I gave was for the student to use two jump ropes and try and build and transport the hut across the gym. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary finished up their cooperative skills unit this week and I am confident in our abilities to comfortably work as a team. To start the week off we played bean bag blitz. It was great game that had similarities to capture the flag. We ended the week participating in hula hut throwdown. This game requires students to designate jobs within their teams, staying in their "position" and to contribute to the team.

Kdg.-2nd GradersThis was a great week! So many smiles, so much fun moving! The week started off with us talking about the importance of safety in general space. We played, "Spot the Spot." Poly spots were spread out around the gymnasium and underneath two of them were cards that said you are it. Those students were able be taggers for two minutes, and people they froze were able to get up in a variety of different ways. (see below for our high five planks). The second half of the week we played rock, paper, scissors hoop jump. RPS hoop jump is the internet video sensation that has been sent to me countless times this summer. I doctored it up a bit to allow for maximum participation and gamified it with levels for goals. 3rd-5th GradersWe completed our fitness testing this week and chose to set goals. We talked about making SMART goals that were specific and realistic. Each student filled out a goal sheet that we will look back on during January and May. Upper elementary also played RPS hoop jump, and I think they got into it more than the younger kiddos! Kdg.-2nd GradersIn lower elementary, we are focusing on our classroom rules, procedures, and working together to get to know our classmates. In the first day of PE this week, students participated in an activity called "musical hoops", and we travel using different "locomotors" or ways to move as well call it. We worked on speeds, levels, and cooperatively getting in a hoop when the music was off. Most classes were able to fit into three or four hoops in the end! The second half of the week was dedicated to our "stick races" our cardiovascular test for lower elementary, they get to cheer on their teammates and really seem to truly love this! 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary student began work on their FitnessGram Fitness Tests. The two tests we focused on this week were: Push-Ups and the Pacer Test. The push-up test is performed to a pre-recorded voice over that instructs the students to go "down" and back "up." This assessment targets overall upper-body strength and endurance - primarily the chest, but also the biceps and front deltoids too. The Pacer is our cardiorespiratory endurance assessment and it too is performed to a pre-recorded voice/beep. We perform the 20m test, and each time the student hears a beep, they attempt to run to the other side of the gym, before another beep. Each minute the cadence increases, and students are allowed two misses and then their test is over.
Why Fitness Test?
In order to better our skills in our aerobic capacity, this year I have added a 5-minute lap challenge each month. Students work together to run as many laps as possible in five minutes. I take the average with the number of kids that ran and that is their score. I was absolutely blown away by the effort that was shown. We completed our first 5-minute lap challenge this month! Congratulations to Mrs. Hoholik's 5th Graders for running the most laps this month. I can't wait to see who will try and defeat them in October! I hope you all had a relaxing and eventful summer! I am so excited to be back at Emerald for year 3. We as a staff are excited to help make this your best year yet! The whole school went through behavior lessons the first two days of school (which means I have yet to see some classes for their 1st day of PE) to receive stamps on the Explorer Passport. We met (4) new characters, Ned-Ellie-Sam- and Wendy who help teach us what to do when we are at school. Ned- Need to be Safe Ellie- Expect Respect Sam- Show Responsibility Wendy- Work Together. These schoolwide expectations also carry into Physical Education. I have sent home a classroom newsletter (which I do monthly), a rock wall permission slip (must be filled out yearly prior to participation), and a Monthly Fitness Challenge. Permission slips should be turned in by Friday, September 14th! Included in my newsletter is the new Class Dojo way of tracking behavior in PE, clip charts will stay in the classroom. Thank you to all of the parent that sent in school supplies with their child to be used in PE. I greatly appreciate it, and I know the kids like clean equipment too! Below you will find the attachments if you did not receive them this week! Be sure to check out some of our pictures from our intro assembly as well! |
