Kdg.-2nd GradersThis next unit is themed cooperative activities. We talked about the importance of working together, and good communication. We started off this week with a game called, Hula Hut Relay. Students were divided into teams and raced to assemble their very own hut. There were different builds after we learned to construct such as the whole team bear crawling, crab walking, or blindfoling a person to try and increase difficulty. Younger graders were shown how to assemble, where as the older students had to think critically and combine ideas to figure it out! The last half of the week, classes participated in hula hut throwdown. This is a game where all positions are crutial to team success. For example, if "gatherers" are not adding balls to the ball cart, scorers and destroyers couldn't do thier jobs. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary is also working on teamwork activities/accepting all students into their teams. We played the same game as lower elementary did, Hula Hut Throwdown, except I divided the class into two teams, and then those teams had to break down who was playing which of the positions and how mnay of each position was needed. Some classes excelled, and some classes struggled. It was so wonderful to see some of the student step up and really take a leadership role! What a win! The last half of the week, we played a new game called space invaders. In space invaders teams had to move around the gym in hula hoops to collect resources without ever stepping out of their hula hoops. Many kids really seemed to enjoy this one!
