Kdg.-2nd GradersLower elementary finished up their foot dribble and kicking unit with two really great activities. On our first day of PE this week, we played scooter soccer, and on the second day we played soccer tag. The scooters slowed down play and gave us some time to think about where we should be putting the ball as opposed to just kicking it. The scooters also helped so that we spread out and were not fighting over the ball. Soccer tag is played like regular tag but if a tagger tags you, the ball must be put above your head, and legs apart like a triangle until someone scores a "goal" between your legs, and then the student is back in! Our second graders were able to take it up a notch, and do jumping jack legs so that we worked on our timing as well! 3rd-5th GradersWe continued four goal soccer with all the classes this week. Such a great cardiovascular activity, the kids love this game, and I love that they do so well and work hard! The second half of the week we played soccer kickball. Played like traditional kickball but with one base, and fielders must trap and dribble the ball to shoot it in the goal for an out. Playing this game has got me and the kids so excited for kickball!

Kdg.- 2nd GradersLower elementary started off the week by participating in Dribble 500. In Dribble 500, students dribbled their ball around the roadway and followed different signs. We did push-ups to pump up our tires, windshield wiper abs to clean the bugs off, we toe tapped and looked both ways at the railroad tracks, etc. It was a bunch of fun! Wednesday and Thursday of these week we invited the firefighters into the gym for a fire prevention assembly, which means PE was moved to a classroom. Lower elementary participated in Cosmic Kids Yoga, going on a bear hunt, and the very hungry caterpillar. They did absolutely awesome, I couldn't be more proud of their classroom behavior. 2nd Graders started to learn offense and defense and the important of playing your position and not chasing the ball all over during Zone Soccer. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary participated in two activities that helped improve their soccer skills. The beginning of this week students played line soccer in four different teams. The second half of the week (those that had class) started playing four goal soccer. The rest of the classes participated in a variety of PE activities in the classroom. Activities included: (1) PE-oploy (2) Fitness Jenga (3) Bucket Bounce (4) Candy Land Fitness (5) Cup Stacking (6) Fitness Bingo (7) Yoga Congratulations to Mrs. CYHO's 5th Graders for being back to back champs! Mrs. Snyders class was two laps away though so they are right on your tail! Can they take the lead next month? We will have to wait and see...check out the results below!Kdg. - 2nd GradersThis week we kicked off our kicking, dribbling and trapping skills. Day one consisted of 6 diferent stations for skills and drills. Day two focused primarily on dribbling and trapping skills. This was practiced by playing Red Light, Green Light Soccer. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary is focusing on a few more skills during their soccer unit. Dribbling, passing, trapping, punting, and shooting. They too started off with stations for the first half of the week. It was followed by a favorite of mine, Soccer Bandits!
Congratulations to the Sherbinow/Gilroy 2nd grade split, for being the most behaved class in the gym for the month of September! Proud of you!Kdg.-2nd GradersWe had an eventful week in lower elementary this week. We continued working on our personal / social skills of teamwork, following directions, sharing equipment and taking turns. We used the parachute on their first day of PE this week. We played a variety of games such as cat and mouse, duck duck goose with the parachute, climb the mountain, popcorn and color shift. It was a blast, and we really learned how important it is that we work together. The second half of the week was equally exciting. Students were able to construct hula huts with increasing levels. Level one started easy with them simply building it and racing to the otherside of the gym. We climbed through, went through blindfolded and more. The most challenging task I gave was for the student to use two jump ropes and try and build and transport the hut across the gym. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary finished up their cooperative skills unit this week and I am confident in our abilities to comfortably work as a team. To start the week off we played bean bag blitz. It was great game that had similarities to capture the flag. We ended the week participating in hula hut throwdown. This game requires students to designate jobs within their teams, staying in their "position" and to contribute to the team. Kdg.-2nd GradersThis was a great week! So many smiles, so much fun moving! The week started off with us talking about the importance of safety in general space. We played, "Spot the Spot." Poly spots were spread out around the gymnasium and underneath two of them were cards that said you are it. Those students were able be taggers for two minutes, and people they froze were able to get up in a variety of different ways. (see below for our high five planks). The second half of the week we played rock, paper, scissors hoop jump. RPS hoop jump is the internet video sensation that has been sent to me countless times this summer. I doctored it up a bit to allow for maximum participation and gamified it with levels for goals. 3rd-5th GradersWe completed our fitness testing this week and chose to set goals. We talked about making SMART goals that were specific and realistic. Each student filled out a goal sheet that we will look back on during January and May. Upper elementary also played RPS hoop jump, and I think they got into it more than the younger kiddos! Kdg.-2nd GradersIn lower elementary, we are focusing on our classroom rules, procedures, and working together to get to know our classmates. In the first day of PE this week, students participated in an activity called "musical hoops", and we travel using different "locomotors" or ways to move as well call it. We worked on speeds, levels, and cooperatively getting in a hoop when the music was off. Most classes were able to fit into three or four hoops in the end! The second half of the week was dedicated to our "stick races" our cardiovascular test for lower elementary, they get to cheer on their teammates and really seem to truly love this! 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary student began work on their FitnessGram Fitness Tests. The two tests we focused on this week were: Push-Ups and the Pacer Test. The push-up test is performed to a pre-recorded voice over that instructs the students to go "down" and back "up." This assessment targets overall upper-body strength and endurance - primarily the chest, but also the biceps and front deltoids too. The Pacer is our cardiorespiratory endurance assessment and it too is performed to a pre-recorded voice/beep. We perform the 20m test, and each time the student hears a beep, they attempt to run to the other side of the gym, before another beep. Each minute the cadence increases, and students are allowed two misses and then their test is over.
Why Fitness Test?
In order to better our skills in our aerobic capacity, this year I have added a 5-minute lap challenge each month. Students work together to run as many laps as possible in five minutes. I take the average with the number of kids that ran and that is their score. I was absolutely blown away by the effort that was shown. We completed our first 5-minute lap challenge this month! Congratulations to Mrs. Hoholik's 5th Graders for running the most laps this month. I can't wait to see who will try and defeat them in October! |
