I hope you all had a relaxing and eventful summer! I am so excited to be back at Emerald for year 3. We as a staff are excited to help make this your best year yet! The whole school went through behavior lessons the first two days of school (which means I have yet to see some classes for their 1st day of PE) to receive stamps on the Explorer Passport. We met (4) new characters, Ned-Ellie-Sam- and Wendy who help teach us what to do when we are at school. Ned- Need to be Safe Ellie- Expect Respect Sam- Show Responsibility Wendy- Work Together. These schoolwide expectations also carry into Physical Education. I have sent home a classroom newsletter (which I do monthly), a rock wall permission slip (must be filled out yearly prior to participation), and a Monthly Fitness Challenge. Permission slips should be turned in by Friday, September 14th! Included in my newsletter is the new Class Dojo way of tracking behavior in PE, clip charts will stay in the classroom. Thank you to all of the parent that sent in school supplies with their child to be used in PE. I greatly appreciate it, and I know the kids like clean equipment too! Below you will find the attachments if you did not receive them this week! Be sure to check out some of our pictures from our intro assembly as well!

Just like that another year has come and gone. Monday we had our JDRF Reward at the high school. Mr. Lindstrom's 4th graders were quite the little fish and I thought I could wear them out-but was proven wrong! Tuesday was our school carnival- it was an absolute blast. Thank you so much to all the teacher, parents, and businesses that helped make this day a success. I am positive there wasn't a smile-less face. Thursday, was FIELD DAY! It could not have been better weather. Mrs. CYHO's 5th graders were the champs of the Upper Classman Tug of War division, with Mrs. Richey's Kindergartners taking on and defeating the 1st graders for the lower division. The obstacle course was a new addition this year instead of the parachute, and it seemed to go really well. ( I may have saw some future track stars emerging- fingers crossed!)
It has been a pleasure to have your kiddos this year! I hope you all have a safe and active summer, and get to go on all the adventures--I know that's how my summers usually look! See you in the fall. With it being a short week and kids getting pulled in all different directions I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to better our skills in lawn games-games that they will more than likely play over the summer, and a brush up on rules/how to play would be beneficial. We had lots of fun this week in a less structured, more relaxed atmosphere than they are typically used to. We had cornhole, ladderball, washer toss, badminton (in gym- wind), giant balls and giant frisbee's, bocce ball, and Kan Jam. Lots of fun was had!
Kdg.-1st GradersLower elementary kicked the week off with their "Stick Races." Stick races at Emerald Elementary are 6 kids per group run for 2:30, and collect as many popsicle sticks as they can by running laps. They are allowed to cheer, dance, and encourage their teammates. You can probably guess it get's pretty exciting in there! The last half of the week we continued to build our cardiovascular endurance by participating in "Frogger/Crossy Road" as kids these days know it. They start at one side of the gym and try to make it past the taggers on the scooters, while going through various obstacles. It is an absolute blast, and the kids always get excited when they see it set up! 3rd-5th GradersThis week started off with the PACER TEST!!! The kids either love this or hate this! It is a multi stage aerobic capacity test that gets faster the longer they run! We have had some impressive scores...keep your eyes peeled for end of the year FitnessGram Record. As always, if they score in the top portion of the Healthy Fitness Zone they receive a gold certificate, and of course bragging rights!
The last half of the week we missed the 5th Graders as they were away enjoying their clear lake field trip (jealous PE teacher over here!), but I know they had so much fun! The 3rd and 4th graders started their curl up tests, and played Frogger/Crossy Road. 11 am Central Park * JDRF Walk* Lunch to FollowPlease remember:
The Dimes for Diabetes competition is well underway, please keep remembering to help collect coins for your classroom. Mr. Lindstrom's 4th Graders are currently in the lead! Last day to bring in money is this coming Wednesday!Emerald Elementary's JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes is Monday, May 21st at Central Park. Please come and join us!Kdg-2nd GradersWith the year coming to an end, lower elementary has been participating in tag games. We have played a variety of games, with Secret Agent Tag being one of my personal favorites, and always a class favorite, Sharks and Minnows. 3rd-5th GradersThis week we have been predominantly focusing on increasing our cardiovascular endurance. We have participated in a variety of different tag games, which has had them leaving sweaty each day! This is a great change up for them after all of our units on manipulative skills. We have been working on starting out end of the year FitnessGram Testing. At Emerald Elementary, we have the students test in the beginning of the year, and again at the end of the year to better assess their level of fitness as they get older. We do the Pacer test (cardiovascular), sit and reach (flexibility), push-up and curl-up tests (muscular strength and endurance). Our goal is to make sure that we are falling within the Healthy Fitness Zones of (HFZ) that the tests set forth. Ask your son/daughter how they have been doing! This week we did the sit and reach and the push-up portions! Next week, will be both the PACER and the sit-up test.
Kdg-2nd GradersLower elementary built on the striking skills we practice last week. We played "One Ball" the first half of the week. Students were divided into groups of (3) and instead of running around all bases, just did one each time. We used the tee in Kindergarten and 1st grades, and I slowly underhand pitched to the 2nd graders who felt they were ready. The last half of the week, we progressed further and played tee-ball with big mat bases. We learned the ways to get out, and the importance of moving quickly! Kdg.-2nd GradersWe started off practicing our underhand throw in day one of class this week. We played, "Champions and Challengers." They did a really nice job with form. The second day of the week, we started striking, and 1st and 2nd graders used gloves. They practiced hitting balls from tees and I would slow pitch to the students who are in baseball/softball etc. 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary were able to play two modified versions of baseball/softball. We played "Lemming Ball" and "Bark Ball". I really liked the Lemming Ball game because all of the students were able to run each time the ball was hit, so it really helped build their cardiovascular endurance! Bark ball was fun because they were introduced to several of the rules without having to monitor 3 bases.
Kdg.-2nd GradersWe finished our striking with short-handled implements unit this week. Students learned how to play "Floorball." Floorball is played completely underneath a net and the ball is passed back and forth between opponents. It was a perfect introductory game because it was easier on their hand eye coordination not having to track the ball in the air, or on a bounce. The last portion of the week we played a similar version of pickleball. Students practiced underhand serves, and contacting a moving ball after a bounce. They were surprised to see how much more difficult this was! I had originally planned to play a game of striking four square, but after their initial class this week, I knew that would have to wait until next year when we had refined our skills! 3rd-5th GradersUpper elementary continued striking this week as well. We were able to use two different short-handled implements: a tennis racket and a badminton racket. 3rd graders focused on the differences between the two, bouncing on a serve, underhand/overhand, scoring, etc. but didn't actually score unless they chose to. 4th and 5th graders actually scored games and I rotated teams to the middle courts in order to play a championship like game. I was pleased to see how many of them have said they played badminton before, they really enjoyed playing!
